Em 1978, na cidade de Leeds, UK, três estudantes de Arte, Tom Morley, Nial Jenki e Green Strohmeyer Gartside formaram o grupo musical Scritti Politti, cujo nome foi extraído dos escritos do fundador do Partido Comunista Italiano (PCI), António Gramsci (1891 – 1937). O grupo girava, essencialmente, à volta de Green (ex-jovem comunista), compositor do seu reportório. Green era um ferveroso adepto do Do It Yourself (DIY). O DIY consistiu numa espécie de movimento, iniciado no final da década de 70 e no início da de 80, visando autopromover a edição e a promoção de cassetes e discos de 7” de grupos e interpretes de uma forma independente, isto é, fora do circuito das grandes editoras, originando o aparecimento das editoras independentes, mais conhecidas por Indies. O primeiro single editado pelos Scritti Politti, “Skanc Blog Bologna”, apareceu na sua editora St. Pancras. O single viria a ser editado em 1979 pela editora independente Rough Trade, alinhada com os ideais do Labour. De 1979 a 1981, o grupo, além de proceder a algumas alterações dos seus elementos, refinou o seu estilo musical através de uma fusão de Soul, Jazz, Pop e Reggae, da qual resultaram os temas “The Sweetest Girl” de 1981, “Faithless”, “Asylums In Jerusalem” e do álbum “Songs To Remember” todos de 1982. além da evolução musical, as letras das composições reflectiram a evolução do pensamento de Green, grandemente influenciado pelo filósofo francês Jacques Derrida (1930 – 2004) que foi o introdutor do Descontrutivismo que, em síntese, é um processo de decomposição de um texto, com o objectivo de lhe encontrar sentidos ocultos. O Deconstrutivismo foi elaborado a partir da teoria da Fenomenologia Pura e da Ciência da Essência do filósofo alemão Edmund Husserl (1859 – 1938) e da reflexão do poeta francês Stephane Mallarmé (1842 – 1898), sobre a escrita e a interpretação do filósofo alemão Martin Heidegger (1889 – 1976), realizada pelo filósofo alemão Friedrich Nietzsche (1844 – 1900) que escreveu “Cultura de Energia Vital” e “Vontade de Poder”.
Foi no lado B do 7” “Asylums In Jerusalem e no álbum “Songs To Remember” que Green incluiu a sua composição “Jacques Derrida”, dedicada ao filósofo francês e que é a memória sonora de hoje.
